Money

The local currency is the Egyptian pound (EGP). Cards are accepted in hotels and larger shops, but carry small notes for tips, drinks on trips and markets. Euros, dollars and pounds are widely recognised for tourist services, but paying in local currency is often better value. Check the current exchange rate with your bank before you travel.

Tipping

Tipping is part of daily life in Egypt. On excursions it is always optional, but appreciated if you enjoyed the service: guides, drivers and boat crews rely on it. A small amount per person for the crew, and a little more for a guide who made your day, is customary.

What to wear

• Resort wear is fine in hotels and on boats.
• For the city tour, mosques, churches and temples, cover shoulders and knees.
• Closed shoes for desert safaris and walking shoes for Luxor and Cairo.

Visas and documents

Many nationalities can get a tourist visa on arrival or apply online through Egypt's official e-visa portal. Requirements change, so always check your government's official travel advice before travelling. Carry your passport on Luxor and Cairo trips — it is mandatory for flights and may be checked on the road.

Safety

Hurghada is a well-established resort city and most visits are trouble-free. Follow your government's official travel advice, book excursions with a registered company and keep valuables in your hotel safe. At sea, always follow your guide's instructions.

Avoid common traps

• Very cheap beach-seller excursions may skip entry fees or insurance — always ask what is included.
• Agree prices for camel rides, taxis and photos before you start.
• Shopping stops on tours are optional; you never have to buy.
