Scuba Diving in Hurghada for Beginners: Your First Dive Explained
Hurghada is one of the easiest places in the world to breathe underwater for the first time. The water is warm, visibility is excellent, and sheltered reefs sit just a few metres below the surface.

Who can try diving?
Most healthy people from around 10 years old can join an introductory dive. You'll complete a medical questionnaire first; some conditions — such as certain heart, lung or ear problems, or pregnancy — need a doctor's approval or mean diving isn't suitable. Answer honestly: it's for your safety.
What happens on the day
- Briefing: how the equipment works, how to equalise your ears and a few hand signals.
- Skills in shallow water: clearing water from your mask and finding your regulator, practised where you can stand.
- The dive: a slow descent with your instructor right beside you, typically to a maximum of around 12 metres for beginners.
- Second dive: often the favourite, because by then you're relaxed enough to enjoy the reef.
Safety rules to remember
- Never hold your breath while breathing from a regulator.
- Equalise early and often — before you feel pressure.
- Ascend slowly, together with your instructor.
- Don't fly for 18–24 hours after diving: plan your try-dive early in the holiday.
Diving or snorkelling?
