El Fanous East & West: Shallow Reefs at the Tip of Giftun
El Fanous — 'the lantern' — is the name of two reef sites at the northern tip of the Giftun islands: El Fanous East and El Fanous West. Both are shallow and relatively sheltered, which makes them some of the easiest and most rewarding stops for snorkelers and new divers.
Boats often combine El Fanous with a stop on Giftun, for example on our Orange Bay trip or an introductory dive.
Where is El Fanous?
Both sites lie at the northern tip of Giftun Kebir, the closest part of the island to Hurghada. The boat ride from the marina is short, which leaves more time in the water.
El Fanous East
The east site has coral ridges separated by sandy channels, with plenty of reef fish: parrotfish, wrasse, butterflyfish and groupers. Dolphins and turtles are seen here from time to time, although sightings are never guaranteed.
El Fanous West
The west site is a little more sheltered, with coral blocks, sandy patches and a gentle slope. Rays often rest on the sand, and the calm water makes it a favourite for training dives and relaxed snorkeling.

- Reef shoes are not needed — you enter from the boat

Will we see dolphins at El Fanous?
Sometimes, but it is never guaranteed. If dolphins are your priority, choose the Dolphin House trip, which goes to the reef where they rest most often.
