Many visitors see Hurghada only through a hotel gate. Yet the city has real character: a lively old quarter, a smart marina, local markets and cafés where you'll hear more Arabic than any other language. Here's how to discover it — on your own or on our Hurghada city tour.

The neighbourhoods

• El Dahar — the old town, with the busiest local markets, spice shops and everyday Egyptian life.
• Sakkala — the central tourist area with shops, restaurants and the Marina.
• Village Road and Sheraton Road — hotels, cafés and nightlife.
