Umm Gamar Island Hurghada: Walls, Caves & Coral Plateaus

Umm Gamar (also written Umm Gamaar) is a narrow island north of Hurghada, ringed by reef walls, caves and coral plateaus. It is one of the most scenic reefs in the north and is often combined with the dolphin lagoon at Shaab El Erg.
You can see it on our Dolphin House snorkeling trip when conditions allow.
Where is Umm Gamar?
The island lies north of Hurghada, roughly 1–1.5 hours by boat. It is long and thin, with reef walls on all sides.
What you'll see
- Soft corals and sea fans on the walls, especially on the east side
- Caves and overhangs that divers love
- Coral plateaus with reef fish, morays and sometimes turtles
Snorkelers follow the top of the wall, where the coral is most colourful; divers explore the caves and plateaus below.
Tips for your visit
- The boat ride is longer — take seasickness tablets if you need them
- The walls drop quickly; beginners should stay close to the guide
- Combine with Dolphin House for the best day in the north
Frequently asked questions
Is Umm Gamar good for snorkeling?
Yes, along the top of the reef wall in calm conditions. It suits confident swimmers best.
Can I see dolphins at Umm Gamar?
Dolphins are more likely at nearby Shaab El Erg (Dolphin House), which is why both are often visited on the same trip.
