El Fanadir Reef Hurghada: The Easy Reef Close to Town

El Fanadir is a long fringing reef close to the shore, just north of Hurghada. Because it is only minutes by boat from the marinas, it is one of the most popular sites for introductory dives, check-out dives and short snorkel trips.
It is also a reliable choice on windy days, when the open sea is too rough for the islands.
Where is El Fanadir?
The reef runs parallel to the coast north of central Hurghada. The northern part (El Fanadir North) and the southern part (El Fanadir South) are two separate sites along the same reef.
El Fanadir North
A sloping reef with coral formations, plenty of fish and usually good visibility. Ideal for a first dive: you start in shallow water and follow the slope gently.
El Fanadir South
A reef wall on one side and a gently sloping sandy area on the other, with coral blocks where moray eels, lionfish and blue-spotted rays are often seen.
Tips for your visit
- Short boat ride — good if you get seasick easily
- Calm conditions make it ideal for nervous swimmers and first dives
- Look for rays on the sand and morays under the coral blocks
