Gotta Abu Ramada 'The Aquarium': Hurghada's Fish-Rich Reef

Gotta Abu Ramada is a small, round reef south of the Giftun islands, and its nickname says it all: 'The Aquarium'. Around its coral heads you find more fish per square metre than almost anywhere else near Hurghada.
It is a favourite for introductory dives and snorkel stops, and a great request on a private charter.
Where is Gotta Abu Ramada?
The reef lies close to Abu Ramada Island, south of Giftun. It has three main moorings: the north-west site, The Aquarium itself and the east site. The captain chooses the one most sheltered from the wind on the day.
What you'll see
- Dense schools of anthias, banner fish and butterflyfish
- Parrotfish, groupers and moray eels among the coral heads
- Coral heads rising from a sandy floor to just below the surface
Reef dives here are usually 12–15 metres deep, while snorkelers see the reef life from above. Visibility is usually excellent.
Tips for your visit
- Bring an underwater camera — this is one of the most photogenic reefs near Hurghada
- Stay off the coral heads; they are fragile and protected
- Ask the crew which mooring you are at — each side looks different
