Small Giftun (Giftun Soghayar): Reef Walls & Drift Dives

Small Giftun — Giftun Soghayar in Arabic — is the smaller island of the Giftun National Park, just south of Giftun Kebir. What makes it special is underwater: reef walls on all sides that drop steeply into deep blue water, covered with soft corals and gorgonian fans.

It is a regular stop on snorkel trips around Giftun such as our Orange Bay trip, and one of the best-known dive sites near Hurghada.

Where is Small Giftun?

Small Giftun lies south of Giftun Kebir, around 45–60 minutes by boat from Hurghada. Boats moor along the sheltered side of the island and guests enter the water from the boat.

What you'll see

• Steep reef walls with soft corals and gorgonian fans
• Schools of anthias, fusiliers and snappers along the edge
• Napoleon wrasse, turtles and occasionally larger fish in the blue
• Clear water with very good visibility on most days

Snorkeling and diving

Divers know Small Giftun for its drift dives along the outer edge: the current carries you gently along the wall while the boat follows. Snorkelers stay along the top of the wall in calm conditions, where the light and colours are best. Because the wall drops quickly, it is better for confident swimmers; beginners should stay close to the guide and use a float.

Introductory divers usually stay on the shallower, sheltered parts of the reef with an instructor; the deeper drift dives are for certified divers.

Tips for your visit

• Morning visits usually have calmer water and the best visibility
• Wear reef-safe sunscreen or a rash vest — the sun is strong on the water
• Never touch or stand on the coral; Giftun is a protected national park
